Description

Discover the beauty of authentic Sashiko in this immersive 4-hour workshop, where you’ll be guided through the fundamental rules and philosophy behind this traditional Japanese stitching technique using a palm thimble.

You’ll practice core skills using a stitching exercise sampler, building confidence as you learn the ladder stitch and how to create a clean, hidden knot. After learning Sashiko stitching, you’ll apply your skills to craft a finished Sashiko coaster while gaining a strong foundation for further exploration of Sashiko.

Open to all skill levels, including beginners.

About your instructor:

Sunyoung Seo is a textile artist and educator with a passion for joyful artistic expression. She holds an MFA in Communications and Graphic Design from Pratt Institute in NYC and her quest for learning and new experiences has led her to live in such amazing cities as New York, London, Yokohama, and Chicago. Her interest in hand crafts started through a metalsmithing apprenticeship in Japan which challenged her beyond her 2D design training and fostered her love for creating useable art. Sunyoung’s diverse cultural and geographic life experiences are reflected through her textile work. She enjoys making fun, wearable and useable fiber art highlighting traditional hand stitching techniques from around the world. Sunyoung has taught widely at well-known art centers in Chicago and Michigan, sharing the joy she experiences in the process of making objects that can be delightful in everyday use.
