Description
Enjoy the “sweet” art of embroidery by painting with thread.
Learn (non-intimidating) color theory, color blending and how to use direction to create dimension with thread. We cover basic embroidery stitches and contemporary techniques and merge all your newfound learnings into a candy-inspired embroidery project (not the exact one pictured—we’ll work on something more manageable 😊). We will embrace our own stitch-styles and discover our unique voices in this magical medium. Suitable for all levels of stitchers, including beginners.
For every student in the class, Danielle has personally created a luxe, 26-piece kit so you can keep on with your new project at a leisurely pace. The magic of embroidery is how it slows down time, so we don’t rush you!
What will be provided?
Each person will receive a bespoke embroidery kit including special edition rainbow LDH snips, threads, fabric, pens, pencils and other goodies the artist thinks you may need. Danielle personally sourced every item in these bespoke kits (and schlepped most of them in her luggage all the way from South Africa), so they’re pretty darned mind-blowing.
During class, still and sparkling water is provided to students. If you’d prefer to bring your own beverage, please make sure it’s in a container with a spill-proof lid.
What do I need to bring?
Bring your phone! We will explore how your everyday tool can help your creative process. If you have favorite pencils or pens, you are welcome to bring them along, too.
Bring your lunch (or an appetite)! We have a small fridge and microwave on site for brown-baggers, and there are lots of great places nearby who want to grab a bite out during our lunch break.
What if I’m traveling from out of town?
We often have students travel in from out of town for workshop events like this one. If you’d like help with recommendations for lodging, food, or other activities for the weekend, please get in touch and we’d be more than happy to help.
About your instructor
The threads that link the ancient and the modern are an excellent starting point to describe the work of Cape Town-based artist, Danielle Clough. Danielle’s colourful, delicate embroidery celebrates the joining of the old with the new in a wistful and playful manner that is thoroughly modern in approach, yet nostalgic at heart. She utilises a craft that is perceived as archaic but takes inspiration from current pop culture icons and the timeless beauty of nature. Her choice of materials also reflects this fascination with time and her vibrant picture-scapes are just as likely to adorn a vintage tennis racquet as they are a rusty chain link fence or a brand-new pair of Gucci sneakers.
A lot of rather fancy people have enjoyed Danielle’s work (none as fancy as you though). She has been profiled by Instagram, Colossal, CNN, Vogue.com. Beautiful Bizarre, Hi-Fructose and the Creators Project, and has been published in the New York Times, Casa de Jardim, Hemslöjd, Evening Standard, Inspirations and Homespun amongst others. Her work has caught the attention of prominent clients such as Gucci, Adobe, The African Innovation Foundation, the United Nations, Origins, Nike, Kanye West, and Drew Barrymore.
