Part-time (10hrs/week, with potential for increased hours). Pay rate: $20/hr.
We’re looking for an energetic, detail-oriented person to help with eCommerce and in-person retail operations at Maydel. Maydel is a fast-growing craft company whose mission is to encourage accessibility and responsibility in craft while supporting our local and creative communities. All work hours will take place at our studio in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood.
For the first three months (June–August), the role will be focused on eCommerce, with hours taking place between 10am–4pm on weekdays. At least 3 hours each week during this period need to be worked on Mondays (or Tuesdays, when Monday is a holiday). Beginning in September, at least 3 hours each week need to be worked on Saturdays.
Some of the main functions of this role include:
- Shipping and receiving: Assist in packing and shipping outgoing orders and entering/restocking all inventory that arrives.
- Product photography: Assist in photographing and editing new products added to our selection.
- Website updates: Assist in creating new website pages and implementing performance and usability improvements.
- Customer service: Assist in responding to customer questions and concerns in person, by phone, and via email.
- Documenting processes: Assist in writing and/or recording on video the steps necessary to complete any recurring tasks.
- Coordinating trade and wholesale orders: Assist in opening new accounts, preparing invoices, and submitting orders to manufacturers.
This position is best suited to a person who is eager to learn about entrepreneurship and the craft industry by helping to build a company during its early days. They will have the opportunity to impact the growth of their own role and the company as a whole. The ideal candidate will have natural curiosity and be open about giving and receiving feedback.
Doing this job well requires the following:
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong communication and customer service skills in English
- The ability to manage tasks independently and to seek help when needed
- Time management silks to ensure deadlines are met
- General tech-savviness and comfort/confidence working with computers and cloud-based software. Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g., wooCommerce), photo editing software (e.g. Photoshop), and/or video editing software (e.g. Premiere) is a plus
Physical demands:
- Must be able to stand for up to 8 hours per day.
- Must be able to exert well-paced ability to complete tasks and reach other areas of the property on a timely basis.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to perform daily tasks.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
- Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests and supervisor.
- Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, managing multiple deadlines.

Starting compensation is $20/hr at 10 hrs per week, with the potential to add more hours after 6 months, and/or to work full-time after 12 months. Paid leave is provided in accordance with Chicago’s Paid Leave Ordinance.
